Lewis and Clark TimeLine

1802 -Lewis is offferd to be captian of an expedition. Lewis later recruits Clark as his co-commander. 

1804 -The team of explorers was headed by William Clark and Meriwether Lewis, and it was assisted by Toussaint Charbonneau and his wife, Sacajawea.  The goal of the mission was to get a better understanding of the resources that would be exchanged in the Louisiana Purchase.

May 14, 1804 -Expedition begins.   
  
August 3, 1804 -Corps of Discovery meet with representatives of the Oto and Missouri Indians, give peace medals, 15 star flags and other gifts   

August 20, 1804 -The very first group of Sioux Indians that they met were the Yankton Sioux.  They were a much more peaceful tribe than a number of their neighbors
  
September 7, 1804 -Discover the praire dog animal       

1804 -Built Fort Mandan, which is now near Washburn, North Dakota

April, 1805 -some members of their expedition went home to report about the discoveries     

1805 -The expedition of Lewis and Clark continued over the Continental Divide using horses.  In canoes, they then went over the mountains by the Clearwater River, the Snake River, and the Columbia River.  They went past Celilo Falls and the current Portland. Oregon     

March 23, 1806 -the group began the long journey back home.  On their way home, the men used four dugout canoes that they had purchased from Native Americans as well as one that they stole because of a previous theft.
